The Mazda FD3S RX7 (3rd Gen):

A Timeless Icon with a Few Quirks

The Mazda RX-7…. a name that resonates with car enthusiasts and racers alike. FD3S is the chassis code for the 3rd Generation RX7 also known as the FD RX7. The RX7 is a vehicle that has earned its place in automotive history due to its sleek design, rotary engine, and exhilarating performance.  The RX7 is a car that continues to capture the hearts of many, however, like any classic, it comes with its own set of quirks and flaws that owners and potential buyers should be aware of.

A Masterpiece of Design and Engineering

First introduced in 1992, the FD3S RX-7 was the third generation of Mazda's RX7 lineup. Its design was a departure from its predecessors, featuring a more aerodynamic and curvaceous body that still looks modern today. The RX7 is in our top three for best looking production car OF ALL TIME! Under the hood, the RX-7 housed a 1.3-liter twin-rotor Wankel rotary engine paired with a twin-turbo system that delivered an impressive 236 HP and 218 ft lbs of torque. This combination allowed the RX-7 to achieve a near-perfect 50:50 weight distribution, making it a joy to drive on winding roads and racetracks alike.

The Twin Turbo System: A Double-Edged Sword

While the twin-turbo system was a key factor in the RX-7's performance, it also proved to be one of its most significant flaws. The sequential turbo setup, designed to minimize turbo lag and provide a smooth power delivery, was complex and prone to issues. Many owners have reported problems with the turbos coming on boost and inconsistent boost levels. The system's complexity, with its many vacuum lines, actuators, check valves, etc, makes it difficult to diagnose and repair and often requires someone with experience and knowledge to work on the car. We suggest replacing the twin-turbo setup with a single turbo. While not a cheap fix, it does make the FD RX7 much more enjoyable to own, not only for the increased power and response but also makes them much easier to maintain.

Interior Woes: The Fragility of Plastic

Another common complaint among RX7 owners is the quality of the interior materials. The FD3S was equipped with a predominantly plastic interior, which, over time, has shown a tendency to crack and break. This is particularly true in areas exposed to sunlight, where UV rays can cause the plastic to become brittle. The dashboard, door panels, passenger side door pull and the center console are often the first to show signs of wear.

Balancing Passion with Practicality

Despite these flaws, the Mazda FD3S RX7 remains a beloved vehicle among Japanese car enthusiasts. Its unique rotary engine, stunning design, and exhilarating driving experience make it a car that many are willing to overlook its imperfections for. For those considering purchasing an FD RX-7, it is essential to be aware of these potential issues and to budget for maintenance and repairs.

In conclusion, the Mazda FD3S RX-7 is a car that embodies the spirit of innovation and performance. While it may have its quirks, the joy of driving this iconic sports car far outweighs the challenges. Whether you're a collector, a racer, or simply an admirer of automotive art, the FD RX7 is a vehicle that continues to inspire passion and admiration around the world.

So, do the pros outweigh the cons? For us, it’s a resounding YES!  At some point in your life, you must own an RX7 to experience what a truly well-balanced sports car feels like.
